Change in Desktop Support Services

As of September 1, 2011, the desktop support services previously provided by Technology Resources are now provided by User Services within Information Technology Services (ITS).

Why did you do this?

The University of Texas at Austin has asked departments to review the services they provide and make changes that help the university achieve efficiencies and economies of scale.

Will this change increase costs to my department?

There will be no additional costs to University Operations departments.

Will there ever be a cost increase to my department?

The cost to University Operations is based on the age and number of computers that need to be supported. To contain costs, we will need to continue computer refresh programs and retire older computers.

Will this change affect the way I get assistance?

There will be no immediate changes. The same telephone number, e-mail address and Web request system will still be used for a while. A new number and request system will be implemented at a later date. The current staff will continue to provide assistance.

Will the computer purchase process change for my department?

No, you will still work with the same individuals to develop quotes. TRecs will continue to purchase the computers until August 31, 2011, after that date ITS will purchase the computers.

Who will handle computer inventory?

ITS will begin managing computer inventory for University Operations after August 31, 2011.

Who will do the Information Security Office Risk Assessment Survey?

ITS will complete step one for departments and will coordinate with department heads on step 2 and 3.

Will my service level be impacted?

Departments will not see a difference in support levels. The same individuals will be providing the support and they will remain at their current locations.

What do I do to get a new employee access to the computer resources?

Continue to use the new employee form.

What do I do to remove separated employee access to computer resources?

Continue to use the separated employee form.

Who will provide SharePoint support?

There will be no change in SharePoint support. 

I want to buy new computers; do I have to wait until the next fiscal year?

No, please continue operating as you normally would.
